REA’s February Auction: Vintage Sports Card Record Sales

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) has made a significant splash in the vintage sports card market with their successful February auction, surpassing $1.2 million in total sales. The highlight of the event was the impressive sale of a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, fetching a remarkable $75,000 and setting a new record for its version. This transaction clearly illustrates the enduring allure and demand for rare vintage sports cards.

Another standout item from the auction was a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded PSA GOOD 2, this card broke the record for its condition by selling for $15,000. The auction attracted a wide range of avid collectors and registry builders, with particular interest garnered by the offering of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set. Among them, a #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card commanded the highest bid at $19,200, setting the bar for non-Hall of Famers from this set in its grade.

With a total of 2,732 items on the auction block, REA presented a diverse assortment of collectibles. Notable sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background, graded PSA VG-EX 4, which fetched $21,000. Additionally, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig card graded PSA EX-MT 6 sold for $18,000, while a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set went for $12,000, further highlighting the appeal of sports memorabilia to collectors.

Brian Dwyer, the President of REA, expressed satisfaction with the auction’s success and the enthusiastic participation of the collector community. He also hinted at exciting prospects for REA’s upcoming March and Spring Auctions, suggesting a bright future for sports collectibles enthusiasts.

This recent auction by REA not only reaffirms the enduring popularity and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for future thrilling events. The next Encore event, scheduled for March 14-24, and the Spring Catalog Auction starting on April 5, promise even more opportunities for collectors to acquire coveted items. REA continues to be a premier destination for those passionate about the sports collectibles market.
