Rare Ty Cobb and Babe Ruth Cards Shine at Heritage Auction

In the recent Heritage Spring Sports Card Auction, collectors and enthusiasts gathered to witness the excitement surrounding the sale of some of the most sought-after vintage sports memorabilia. Among the standout items were a rare T206 Ty Cobb card and a coveted Babe Ruth rookie card, both fetching impressive prices and stealing the spotlight at the auction house.

The T206 Ty Cobb card, known for its association with a tobacco brand endorsed by the baseball legend himself, stood out with its sale price of $432,000. Only around 25 of these cards are known to exist, making it a true rarity in the world of card collecting. The back of the card, which boldly proclaims Cobb as the “King of the Smoking Tobacco World,” adds to its uniqueness and historical significance. The glossy finish of the card, a nod to its origins with a short-lived tobacco product, further enhances its allure to collectors.

Another highlight of the auction was the M101-5 Sporting News Blank Back Babe Ruth rookie card, which fetched an impressive $348,000. The only PSA 4 graded card of its kind, this rare gem continues to showcase the enduring appeal and value of vintage sports memorabilia. Other notable sales included a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card at $204,000 and a 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan rookie card selling for $210,000.

With over 2,450 bidders participating from around the world, the total sales at the Heritage Auction surpassed $10 million. The auction featured a diverse range of items that piqued the interest of collectors, including the sale of one of the three PSA 10 graded 1969 Topps Nolan Ryan rookie cards, which went for $180,000. Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, highlighted the broad appeal of the auction, catering to both high-profile collectors and those looking to make significant gains on lower-valued cards.

One of the most intriguing sales was a signed 1951 Bowman Willie Mays rookie card, boasting rarity with only 31 known signed copies in existence. The card’s fascinating backstory and final price of $126,000 captivated collectors. The interest in unopened materials was also evident, with a 1967 Topps Football cello box and a 1970 Topps baseball (Mixed Series) cello box each fetching $81,000. Additionally, a ticket stub from Jackie Robinson’s UCLA football debut exceeded expectations, selling for $22,800.

A remarkable discovery at the auction was the sale of eight 1914 Lawrence Semon issue postcards, featuring Ty Cobb, found in an estate sale. This serendipitous find turned a modest $400 investment into a staggering $50,370, underscoring the potential for incredible discoveries in the vintage card market.
