Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction Showcases Rare Baseball Cards

Heritage Auctions is gearing up to host an exciting event for sports memorabilia aficionados with their Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction scheduled for July 12-13. The auction will boast an impressive array of rare and highly sought-after baseball cards that will surely captivate collectors.

Among the highlights of this auction are some truly exceptional items, such as a mint-condition 1952 Topps Jackie Robinson card, a gem-mint Michael Jordan Fleer rookie card, and a gem-mint chrome rookie card autographed by a young Bryce Harper. These prized possessions are sure to attract significant attention from enthusiasts and collectors alike who are eager to add these iconic pieces to their collections.

The auction will also feature an enticing selection of sealed packs, boxes, and cases, offering a tantalizing opportunity for attendees to potentially unearth hidden gems within. Signed Shohei Ohtani cards, best-of-the-best Ty Cobb tobacco cards, and Babe Ruth’s legendary “Called Shot” jersey will further enhance the allure of this summer auction, promising an unforgettable experience for all participants.

A particularly fascinating highlight of this auction is the collection of 1959 baseball cards that were originally stapled to containers of Canadian cookies from Dad’s Cookies. These exceedingly rare cards, of which only 69 are documented in PSA’s population report, consist of 37 cards that showcase legendary players including Mickey Mantle, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial, and Yogi Berra. The historical significance and scarcity of these Dad’s Cookies cards make them a highly coveted treasure among collectors.

The story behind the Dad’s Cookies cards adds an extra layer of intrigue to their appeal. Produced by Exhibits Supply Company, a Chicago-based entity that originated as a manufacturer of picture postcards distributed in arcades, these cards were a promotional item used by Dad’s Cookies in 1959. Each card featured an autographed picture of a “BIG LEAGUE BASEBALL STAR” and was included in bags and boxes of cookies, showcasing the charming note from the company’s mascot, “Sandy.” The limited surviving examples of these cards make them a rare find and a valuable addition to any collection.

In addition to the Dad’s Cookies cards, this auction will showcase two highly sought-after Ty Cobb T206 cards from the early 1900s. The El Principe de Gales Ty Cobb, graded PSA NM 7, is a rare gem with only one known example bearing the El Principe de Gales advertisement on the back. The American Beauty Portrait-Red Cobb, graded PSA EX-MT 6, stands as the highest-graded example of its kind, further elevating its desirability among collectors and enthusiasts.

Enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to explore sealed boxes and cases like the 1970 Topps Baseball Wax Box (1st & 3rd Series) containing 24 unopened packs from the era of Carl Yastrzemski, Vida Blue, Rod Carew, Tom Seaver, and Roberto Clemente. These items not only hold nostalgic value but also offer a chance to discover hidden treasures from the past, adding an element of excitement to the auction experience.

For those interested in more recent memorabilia, the auction includes modern sealed boxes and cases such as the 2015 Upper Deck Hockey Series 1 Hobby Unopened Case with 12 boxes and the 2020 Panini Flawless Football Factory Sealed Case featuring two boxes. These contemporary items present the thrill of uncovering rare cards like a Connor McDavid rookie card or a gem-mint rookie patch auto, enticing collectors to delve into the mystery of what lies within.

Heritage Auctions’ Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction promises to deliver an unparalleled experience for sports memorabilia enthusiasts, offering a unique opportunity to acquire some of the rarest and most valuable cards in the world of baseball collectibles. With a diverse range of items on display, from iconic rookie cards to sealed boxes brimming with potential, this auction is sure to be a standout event for collectors looking to add exceptional pieces to their cherished collections.
