Takashi Murakami and Topps Redefine MLB Cards for 2025 Tokyo Series

As anticipation builds for the 2025 MLB Tokyo Series, Topps is once again proving that it knows how to step up to the plate. In a pioneering collaboration, celebrated Japanese artist Takashi Murakami brings his unique flair to an exclusive collection of baseball trading cards. This blend of bold artistry and sport highlights not only the high regard for baseball in Japan but also the intersection of culture, aesthetics, and passion that surrounds the game.

Tokyo, a metropolis that reveres both sports and art, sets the stage for this novel collection with a particular nuance only the city can offer. In collaboration with MLB and media powerhouse Complex, Topps has unveiled a limited edition set of trading cards and apparel available through Fanatics. Murakami’s colorful and lively designs breathe new life into the classic baseball card, offering a vibrant homage to the sport’s Japanese influence and illustrious players.

Renowned for his striking color palettes and iconic floral motifs, Murakami has brought his distinctive style to the baseball card realm. The designs maintain the broad appeal of Topps’ traditional style while standing out distinctly through a playful blend of pop art and sporting memorabilia. These one-of-a-kind cards offer Japan’s rich baseball culture a fresh, energetic face while remaining firmly rooted in their nostalgic charm.

Topps has a history of adventurous collaborations. In 2024, they teamed up with rapper Travis Scott to launch the highly-coveted Cactus Jack card set. Now with Murakami’s involvement, Topps continues to transcend boundaries, drawing an audience that spans from die-hard sports fans to dedicated art collectors.

Complementing the trading cards is a collection of Nike MLB apparel designed by Murakami, extending his artistic vision to fashion. The collection includes t-shirts, sweatshirts, and player jerseys, all carefully crafted with Murakami’s imaginative flair. These exclusive items will be up for grabs starting March 7th across multiple platforms, including Fanatics.com, MLBShop.com, and Complex.com. For those keen to experience the collection in person, select merchandise will be available at MLB Tokyo Series games, Dodger Stadium, Wrigley Field Clubhouse stores, and the MLB Flagship Store in New York City.

Two particular card sets headlining the collection are must-haves for enthusiasts and collectors alike:

Firstly, the 2025 Topps Baseball Series 1 – Tokyo Game Exclusive releases on March 1st. Available in a Mega Box priced at $50, these cards offer base card variations featuring Murakami’s artwork, limited to just five copies each. The set includes cards of iconic Japanese players, with themes such as Tokyo Nights, World Tour Domination, and the History of Japanese Baseball. Autographs from Japanese baseball legends like Hideki Matsui, Yu Darvish, and Ichiro add an authentic edge, transforming these cards into genuine collector’s items.

Next, launching on March 7th is the 2025 Topps x Murakami MLB Tokyo Series Matchup Set. This curated 25-card set, priced at $120 per hobby box, includes parallels and autographs with the highly sought-after chase card—a dual-autographed redemption card signed by both Takashi Murakami and Shohei Ohtani.

These limited edition cards are sure to be snatched up quickly. For those who cannot be physically present at the Tokyo Series, the window to act is short. The Topps Series 1 – Tokyo Game Exclusive will be found at select Tokyo locations such as Miyashita Park’s rooftop, Tokyo Dome’s Prizm Hall, and Topps’ interactive activation in Shibuya, alongside online availability at jp.topps.com. Meanwhile, the Topps x Murakami Matchup Set will be exclusively available at Complex.com, Complex’s LA store, and select pop-up sites across Tokyo.

To deepen the engagement with fans, Topps has organized an elaborate three-floor interactive exhibition in Shibuya from March 13-16. This immersive experience is dedicated to the captivating journey of Japanese baseball, featuring rare trading cards, memorabilia, and a special homage to Shohei Ohtani, capturing some of his most iconic moments.

Through this collaboration, Topps is not merely cementing Japan’s integral relationship with baseball; it’s also evolving the concept of collectibles by merging sport with art and culture. Each card is more than a mere piece of memorabilia; it’s a 3×5-inch canvas of history, highlighting the dynamic synergy between past traditions and contemporary creativity. This collection is a testament to the timeless resonance of baseball and its ability to morph and flourish across varying cultural landscapes, transforming collectibles into coveted masterpieces.
