Babe Ruth’s ‘Called Shot’ Jersey at Heritage Auctions

Babe Ruth and his larger-than-life persona continue to mesmerize fans decades after his playing days, with one of his most fabled moments now poised to make history once again. The renowned jersey he allegedly wore during the unforgettable “called shot” in the 1932 World Series is about to take the center stage at Heritage Auctions. With a staggering estimated value of $30 million, this gray road flannel could set a new benchmark as the most expensive sports memorabilia ever sold.

The stage was set nearly 92 years ago at Wrigley Field, where Ruth’s bold prediction of a home run against the Chicago Cubs became immortalized. This pivotal moment in baseball lore has been a subject of much intrigue, sparking debates and capturing the imagination of fans worldwide. Supported by photo matching from two reputable companies, the jersey’s authenticity gains credibility, further elevating its allure and potential worth.

Previously changing hands in 2005 for $944,000, the jersey, initially consigned by the daughter of one of Ruth’s golfing companions, has undergone meticulous conservation work by the Textile Conservation Workshop. This effort not only repaired a tear but also safeguarded the jersey’s original state, mirroring the style worn by the Yankees in 1932 and enhancing its historical significance.

Chris Ivy, the Director of Sports Auctions at Heritage, emphasized the unparalleled significance of Ruth’s World Series jersey within the realm of sports memorabilia. Ivy remarked, “Ruth’s World Series jersey is the most significant piece of American sports memorabilia to be offered at auction in decades. It will hold the record as the most expensive sports collectible ever to cross the auction block.”

In the realm of high-priced sports collectibles, the record is presently held by a Mickey Mantle 1952 Topps card, fetching an astounding $12.6 million in 2022 also at Heritage Auctions. The highest amount ever paid for a Ruth jersey stands at $5.6 million for a circa 1928-1930 model, sold at Yankee Stadium in 2019 through Hunt Auctions.

The meticulous analysis of the jersey’s provenance and unique features, including button placement and specific stains, has been instrumental in affirming its authenticity. Authenticators like MeiGray meticulously scrutinize every aspect of game-worn jerseys, treating each piece as uniquely identifiable – akin to a fingerprint. This rigorous attention to detail offers bidders concrete visual evidence supporting the jersey’s claim to fame.

The enduring impact of Ruth’s “called shot” reverberates through baseball history, characterized not only by its theatrical nature but also by the enduring legend it spawned. Despite conflicting accounts of the event, Ruth’s charisma and performance that day only served to heighten his mythical status. The jersey is set to be showcased at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Cleveland this summer, preceding the eagerly anticipated auction scheduled for August 23-25.

Beyond celebrating a pivotal moment in sports history, this auction underscores the thriving market for high-value sports memorabilia, attracting a diverse range of collectors and enthusiasts eager to possess a tangible piece of baseball folklore.
