Historic Sports Memorabilia Auction: Freeman’s/Hindman Delights Collectors

Freeman’s/Hindman is currently hosting an exhilarating auction filled with historic sports memorabilia that is sure to captivate collectors worldwide. The centerpiece of this auction is a complete set of 1984-85 Star Company basketball cards, presented in their original team bags just as they were sold over three decades ago. This set boasts 288 cards, showcasing the highly coveted Michael Jordan rookie card and is expected to fetch between $50,000 and $70,000 due to its rarity and the enduring appeal of Jordan in the sports collectibles market.

The Star Company made a bold move by securing the NBA’s trading card rights in the early 1980s, following Topps’ decision not to renew its contract. With limited distribution through mail orders, hobby shops, and select sporting events, Star cards are less common compared to those from larger producers, making them highly sought after by collectors. Retaining these cards in their original packaging further enhances their value and scarcity, making this complete set a true gem in the world of sports memorabilia.

While basketball steals the spotlight, the auction also boasts exceptional pieces from baseball history, including three autographed baseballs signed by the legendary Babe Ruth. One of these baseballs features Ruth’s bold signature on the sweet spot, emphasizing his enduring legacy and appeal to collectors of historical sports artifacts.

In addition to the remarkable Jordan cards from his rookie season, the auction offers a diverse array of vintage cards and sports collectibles. Among these are a signed baseball from the 1955 Baseball Hall of Fame induction weekend with signatures from iconic players like Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Cochrane, a single-signed Jimmie Foxx ball, and a 1959 Ty Cobb signed and inscribed baseball.

Vintage card enthusiasts will find several notable lots to pique their interest, including a rare 1968 O-Pee-Chee Nolan Ryan rookie card graded PSA 8 and a near-complete set of 1952 Topps baseball cards featuring over 60 high numbers. The auction also features multiple Mickey Mantle cards from the 1950s and 60s, adding to its appeal for collectors of legendary sports figures.

Noteworthy items up for grabs include a San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl XXIV Champions ring, a 1926 New York Yankees multi-signed baseball with autographs from Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, as well as a collection of 1920s-30s St. Louis Cardinals contract agreements signed by the illustrious Branch Rickey.

Running through June 13 on Freeman’s/Hindman’s website, this auction not only showcases the rich history embedded in these collectibles but also provides sports enthusiasts and collectors with a chance to own a piece of this storied past. Whether you’re a basketball aficionado, a baseball buff, or a general sports history enthusiast, this auction promises a treasure trove of iconic sports relics waiting to be discovered and cherished.
